The leatherback sea turtle is the largest sea turtle in the world. They can grow up to 6 ft and wait over 1500 lb. They are the only sea turtles that do not have a hard shell but instead a tough leathery skin. This enormous sea turtle has not changed in millions of years and has looked the same since when the dinosaurs walked and swam Earth. They can swim up to 10,000 miles a year and stay underwater up to 85 minutes. Their favorite food Is jellyfish and sometimes you can see them feeding on the sea nettle jellyfish in Monterey Bay. Due to destruction of their nesting beaches, illegal collection of turtle eggs, pollution and accidental capture in fishing equipment, leatherback turtles are today critically endangered.
This leatherback sea turtle cloisonné is made from glass enamel 24 karat gold and fine silver. The setting is made from 22 and 18 karat gold and is garnished with a teardrop topaz.
