Santo Odobenus Rosmarus
Santo Odobenus Rosmarus
One-of-a-kind
There is something truly magical about the Aurora, and how it dances across the sky in the most northern reaches of our world. The awe and wonder it invokes in us is a feeling I often wonder if animals also experience.
This newest piece, Santo Obodenus Rosmarus, quite literally translating as, Saint tooth walking sea horse, is part of a larger ongoing collection I am calling EcclesiastiSeas.
Though I am not a religious person, I am in constant awe of the natural world. I am always trying to translate that feeling of religious reverence into my pieces.
Each piece is a window into marine and polar worlds, far reaches of our little blue dot though seemingly distant, yet constantly impacted by our decisions as humans.
After an excursion to the Metropolitan Museum of Art I studied the historic and religious iconography for hours on end. I especially focused on the Byzantine era, a time when enamel was first being utilized in art and jewelry
I became immersed in the visual languages of stained glass windows and idolized archways, each a vast canopy pulling attention towards the heavens.
I paired these ecclesiastic designs with animals and atmospheric landscapes framinging the subject matter as idols and saints, the religious icons that I wish we would actual rever.
I hope these pieces make you feel something and thank you for taking this journey with me.
